Introduction

In today’s world, climate change has become one of the most serious global challenges. Rising temperatures, melting glaciers, and unpredictable weather patterns clearly show its impact. One of the major contributors to climate change is poor waste management. Every day, humans generate a huge amount of waste, but much of it is not handled properly, leading to environmental damage.


What is Waste Management?

Waste management refers to the process of collecting, separating, treating, and disposing of waste in an efficient and environmentally friendly way. It includes methods such as reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling.

However, in many places, waste is simply dumped in open areas or landfills without proper treatment. This creates pollution and harms both nature and human health.



Link Between Waste Management and Climate Change

Waste management is closely connected to climate change. When organic waste like food and plant materials is thrown into landfills, it decomposes and produces methane gas. Methane is a highly harmful greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to global warming.


In addition to this:

  • Burning plastic waste releases toxic gases into the atmosphere

  • Industrial waste pollutes air, water, and soil

  • Increased waste leads to increased production, which raises carbon emissions


All these factors together accelerate climate change.

  • Problems Caused by Poor Waste Management

  • Water Pollution: Rivers and groundwater become contaminated

The problem of waste can be reduced by adopting simple and effective practices:

Use products multiple times instead of discarding them after one use

Separate waste materials like paper, plastic, and glass for recycling

4. Composting

Reduce the use of single-use plastic products



Role of Students and Youth

Students and young people can play an important role in protecting the environment:

  • Practice waste segregation at home

  • Spread awareness about cleanliness and sustainability

  • Participate in environmental campaigns and cleanliness drives

  • Choose eco-friendly products

  • Even small actions by individuals can create a big impact.


SDG Correlation (Sustainable Development Goals)

The issue of waste management is closely connected with global sustainability efforts and directly supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Proper waste management not only helps in reducing pollution but also plays an important role in building a sustainable and climate-resilient future.


SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Waste management strongly supports SDG 12, which focuses on reducing waste generation and promoting efficient use of resources. Practices such as recycling, reusing materials, and minimizing waste help in conserving natural resources and reducing the burden on landfills. By adopting sustainable consumption habits, individuals and communities can significantly lower environmental damage.


SDG 13: Climate Action

Improper waste disposal contributes to climate change through the release of harmful greenhouse gases like methane. By managing waste effectively, especially through composting and reducing landfill waste, greenhouse gas emissions can be minimized. Awareness programs and sustainable practices also encourage people to take active steps against climate change, directly supporting SDG 13.


SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

Clean and well-managed waste systems are essential for creating sustainable cities. Proper waste disposal, cleanliness drives, and community participation help in reducing pollution and improving living conditions. These efforts make cities safer, healthier, and more environmentally friendly, aligning with the goals of SDG 11.

By improving waste management practices, we are not only solving local environmental problems but also contributing to global sustainability goals. Small actions like reducing plastic use, recycling waste, and spreading awareness can collectively create a big impact and help achieve a cleaner and greener planet.
